Me… and My Shadow…

Me, Myself and I

This weeks theme was a lot of fun. But I say that every week, don’t I? I just really like my job, okay. :)

Doing research on themes and when they are usually addressed in preschool, I learned that this is a theme that usually happens at the beginning of the school year as a ‘Get To Know You.’ But, we already know each other. A LOT. So I thought at the beginning of the calendar year would be a better time. Sure, why not.

This was also the week I got myself a laminator and my life was changed forever.

People Puppets

Printed full body pictures of the boys, laminated them and glued them to toilet paper rolls.

Then let them act out some scenarios. Interestingly enough, Turtle was much nicer to his puppet brother than his 'actual' brother. Brothers.

Face It, You’re Weird

Again take a picture of the child (this time just the face blown up) and again, laminate it.

Then get some dry erase markers and GO CRAZY!

Body Beautiful

Trace the body as best as possible. I messed up a bunch of times, but got a few good ones, which is good because Froggy decided he didn't want to be traced.

Then let them go crazy with colors. Turtle wanted me to know why he picked each color and so I wrote that down. "Green because it's my favorite color," "Orange because it's Froggy's favorite." So I wrote that down.

Then cut out the outline and give them a whole bunch of fun things to decorate with.

And then we read a lot of books.

Incredible Me by Kathi Appelt

I Like Myself  by Karen Beaumont

I’m Gonna Like Me–Letting Off a Little Self Esteem by Jamie Lee Curtis

I really liked all these books but am curious to if it was just the ones I found or if it’s a thing in self esteem books for preschoolers that all the characters were girls. Believe me, boys have problems with self esteem too. Most other themes I’ve found have a lot of books that do a good job of making the character rather genderless or ambiguous. But maybe it was just the ones I picked.
