Native American Authors: A List

A while ago on a Goodreads group I follow, someone asked for a list of Native authors who weren’t Sherman Alexie or Louise Erdrich. Specifically, they were looking for “new” authors or authors born between 1970 and Now.

Then last month I gave a talk at a Harry Potter conference about Native Representation in the Potterverse and when I was done, many asked what I’d suggest they read to get a true representation.

Of course, part of me wanted to jump up and down and shout, ME! ME! 😉 I also wanted to have other authors in my arsenal that weren’t my favorite standby Sherman Alexie. So, I thought I’d do some research and compile a list of Native authors and what they wrote and where to find them. I started with the names shared on GoodReads, then while researching my talk for the conference, I found this great resource on Twitter (of all places).

The list is meant to highlight all Native American writers, whether they be from the USA or Canada. I’m not listing what tribe each author belongs to, but when possible, I’ve included a link to their website (or Wikipedia and the like) if you need more information. I’m also focusing on fiction writers for the most part. If they have novels and books of poetry, I’ll include both, and if they write non-fiction and fiction, I’ll list both of those. I just haven’t gone looking for poets and non-fiction writers (yet) but when I do (or when people let me know where to look) I’ll update this list.

If I’m missing any authors, please let me know. I’ll update and keep it as current as I can.

First, because I’m so excited to have found this, here are a few (there has to be more, and if you know of any let me know) amazing Anthologies out there.

Oh My Goodness, yes! I had him on the list because I had heard him and his son tell stories and I loved them, but for some reason my Google-fu wasn’t working for me the day I went looking for him online and there was nothing that gave me links to his books (I ~might~ have been looking for his son instead accidentally-ooops). But now I see there is a LOT of info and OMG, sooooo many books! Thank you for reminding me. It will be remedied, and the list updated, very soon.
